My 1500 VIA is great with speed-trap and traffic light camera alerts. I've easily saved many times the cost with just that feature!

The traffic predictions and automatic re-routing around detours/congestion has been invaluable, too. Obviously, these GPS units don't know about rush-hour traffic patterns, so if you know a route is GOING to become congested, don't wait for the GPS to alert you because it may be too late. Simply program it to avoid the offending intersection or highway and use an alternate route of your choosing.

BIG TIPS:

1) Apparently TomTom is not too cooperative honoring the lifetime maps feature if/when you eventually sell or give these units away. Maybe if you keep the cryptic code page and the receipt you can convince them to let you transfer the "lifetime" map service, BUT there is an easier way. Create a a free email address from Gmail or Hotmail or whomever just to register and update this unit; you can give that email address and password the new owner if/when you pass this unit on to them. Minor annoyance: one email address is needed for each TomTom unit you register. Would be a lot more convenient for a guy like me if I would register multiple units to the same account. As it is, I have to plug in each TomTom and then log in with the matching email address for that unit.

2) As soon as you get your unit and create an email address per Tip 1 above, download the MyTomTom stuff and update your GPS using your laptop/desktop computer. You may have to update it 2x in a row to get all of the available updates. (e.g., the firmware updates may qualify you for an even more recent map update after the unit is rebooted.)

Once all of the firmware updates are applied, you will find the TomTom's behavior is pretty much like a dash-installed unit. e.g., it will power up as soon as you start the car, and it will automatically power down about 5 seconds after you turn the car off. You can defer the auto-shutdown if you need to do additional programming.
